Samaritans Purse

Once again our pupils have demonstrated their generosity and compassion for others in their recent Shoebox challenge.

Samaritans Purse Appeal

This annual challenge was launched as a House competition with a target of 40 boxes, (10 per house) for the school population to aim at.

I am delighted to be able to report that a total of 53 boxes was in fact produced with Franklin winning the House competition and thus the 25 house points. Newton came second, Sharman third and Dalton fourth.

I am really pleased that so many pupils took part in this challenge and would like to thank them all as there are 53 children around the world who will now have something to open on Christmas day. To put this in context with other schools locally, our 53 boxes shown below with some of our pupils, represents 33% of our school population and as such is the highest percentage of all local schools that we are aware of. Well done Solway!

We have had another busy half term, beginning with an Ofsted Inspection of our English department. These survey inspections are carried out at random on all schools which have been judged Outstanding or Good. The Inspector, Ms Kime, spent two days with the pupils and staff in the English department before declaring that Solway continues to provide a 'Good' curriculum and teaching by an efficiently led and well managed department, enabling pupils to achieve 'Good' results. Well done to Mrs Scholey and her team.

We welcomed JJ Jegede to school in November. It was fabulous to have an Olympic athlete to talk to our Sports Leaders and GCSE PE pupils. He will be back in the new year to continue with the project that Ms Lawson is running with the Year 10 Sports Leaders.

The Year 9s had a brilliant day last Friday, working in teams for the Enterprise Challenge. One team, as you will read inside, came 3rd. A fabulous result!

The Year 10s have had their Rotary Cookery competition while the Year 11 double GCSE Hospitality & Catering group spent this Friday and Saturday preparing, cooking and serving at their Banquet for over 100 guests. No mean feat. A culmination of their efforts this term which equates to 60% of their award. They were all splendid and received nothing but compliments from the guests all evening; not simply for the food, which in itself was delicious but also their courtesy, professionalism and attention to detail. Mrs Cooper can be proud of them all.

The Year 11 mock exams have come to an end; the results will be presented after Christmas in the same way the real results will come out in August, to give the pupils a rehearsal of the actual event.

We have our Community Christmas Lunch on Wednesday, Carol Service on Thursday, and Years 7 to 10 will bring their Levels and Motivations home. We finish at 1pm on Friday 16th December.

Pupils will return after the Christmas break on Wednesday 4th January while Staff have a training day on the Tuesday 3rd January 2012.

Updates

Wednesday 23rd of November was certainly a day to remember for all year 9 pupils participating in this year's Airline Day activity.

airline day 2011

The weeks of planning and preparation undertaken by the pupils came to fruition with the production of a range of appetizing and delicious three course meals. I was very impressed with all our pupils, they were not only very well organised, but had obviously given much thought to the presentation of their work and had in a large number of instances practised their meals at home prior to the day.

The skill level demonstrated was very high as was the level of cooperation and team working that enabled all pupils to be ready to display by 2.15pm. The standard this year was exceptionally high with the vast majority of pupils receiving a Gold Award and three pupils, Joel Baker, Carmen Neilly and Megan Kendall achieving the Diamond Award. Very well done to all who took part.
