Subject: Modern Foreign Languages

Head of Department: Miss K Jones

Subject information:

Language learning at its best can be one of the most enjoyable and
rewarding experiences that life can offer. We learn social skills, the
ability to work in a team, communication skills, problem-solving skills,
confidence, open-mindedness and flexibility, which are all skills employers
look for. Pupils can go on to study Spanish at sixth form and university.
When applying for jobs, if you prove yourself to be a capable employee and
you can speak a foreign language, you are much more likely to be successful
and get the job of your dreams.

KS3 information:

I follow the national curriculum programme of study and all pupils
have two lessons of Spanish a week. In Year 9 pupils start to study
French as well for one lesson a week. I try to make language lessons
fun, interesting and interactive to give pupils a good grasp of the
four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Pupils are
also introduced to the culture and history of Spain and other Spanish
speaking countries.

KS4 information:

We have three lessons a week - a single and a double. This gives us the
opportunity to work on longer extended projects.

Assessment how?

Pupils are assessed in all four skills in Spanish.

Unit 1 - Listening (20%) takes place in the May/June exam period of Year 11.

Unit 2 - Speaking (30%) takes the form of two controlled conditions
assignments. One is a structured conversation and one is an interview. The tasks
tasks take place in school and are marked and assessed by the teacher. They are
then sent to AQA for moderation.

Unit 3 - Reading (20%) takes place in the May/June exam period of Year 11.

Unit 4 - Writing (30%) takes the form of two controlled conditions
assignments. Pupils will have to produce two pieces of writing from different
contexts, such as a news article or a letter to a friend. These will be produced
in exam conditions and sent to AQA to be marked.

Controlled assignments in speaking and writing take place throughout Year 10 and 11.
