Subject: RE/Citizenship

Head of Department: Mrs J Cooper

Subject information:

RE/Citizenship aims to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding
to play an effective role in society at local, national and international level.
It helps them to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are
aware of their duties and rights. It promotes their spiritual, moral, social
and cultural development, making them more self-confident and responsible both in
and out of the classroom. It encourages pupils to play a helpful part in the life
of their schools, neighbourhoods, communities and wider world. It also teaches them
about our economy and democratic institutions and values; encourages respect for
different national, religious and ethnic identities; and develops pupils' ability
to reflect on issues and take part in discussions.

RE, Philosophy and Ethics/COPE

This course builds on the knowledge and understanding developed in key stage 3
and develops pupils understanding of different religious faiths through the study
of a variety of topics in Year 10. These topics include; Religion and Medical Ethics,
Religion and science in relation to creation; Human relationships and Death and the
afterlife. Through this work pupils produce a variety of evidence that contributes to
the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness qualification.

In KS4, alongside the RE, Philosophy and Ethics work pupils also undertake specific
modules of work aimed at developing their understanding of the world of work and future
career options. During the spring of Year 10, pupils develop an awareness of health and
safety through completing the British Safety Council work place hazard awareness course.

During the summer term of Year 10 pupils take part in a preparation for work week,
where they gain experience in applying for a job and taking part in a mock interview with
an employer. Pupils also complete a basic first aid course and undertake training for
the level 2 in Food Hygiene certificate. Enterprise education is also an integral element
of this course and pupils gain knowledge and understanding of personal and business finance,
how to open and manage a bank account and the cost associated with living independently.

In Year 11 Pupils work on the production of their portfolios which contain evidence of
their best work from all areas of the curriculum.

Pupils are required to produce the evidence for six assessed credits focussing on the key
skills essential to their personal development. Improving own Learning; Working with Others;
Problem Solving; Research; Discussion and Oral Presentation.

When completed the portfolio provides pupils with a compilation of work that can be used in
interviews with further education establishments and prospective employers.

curriculum. Pupils work on cross-curricular themes developing their core competences.

In Year 9, pupils work on the Asdan Beliefs and Values Award which when achieved

undertaken in Key stage 4.

The Beliefs and Values award is based on 6 modules focussing on the following topics:
Values, beliefs and decision making; Environment; Crime and punishment; Peace and conflict;
Creed and Inspiration. Through this work pupils are encouraged to develop an understanding
of a variety of religious views.
