Subject information:

Hospitality and Catering Double Award

This course emphasises the importance of practical skills and pupils are expected to
take three practical examinations over the two years. Alongside and complementing the work
done towards this double award qualification, all pupils studying Hospitality and Catering in
Year 10 are expected to take part in the Rotary Junior Master Chef competition during the autumn
term where two pupils will be chosen to represent the Silloth Rotary Club in the Cumbria heat of
this national competition.

In addition, all pupils in Key stage 4 undertake the training and exam for the level 2 Food
Hygiene certificate during their preparation for work experience week in the summer of Year 10.

Resistant Materials

This course is concerned with designing and making objects in three main materials; wood, metal
and plastic. Using the Design Process, pupils are taught to analyse, research, generate and develop
ideas through model making, write specifications, develop practical skills through the production of
products and evaluate their work. Graphics is an integral element of the course and pupils are encouraged
to use a range of techniques to illustrate their ideas clearly.

KS3 information:

Throughout keystage 3 all pupils have the opportunity to develop their knowledge,
understanding and practical skills following programmes of study in three material areas;
Food Technology, Resistant Material Technology and Textile Technology. Within these subject
areas, pupils focus on a range of design and make tasks following the design process and
producing a range of products that develop their practical capability.

In RMT, pupils work with a range of materials including wood, metal and plastics. Emphasis
is placed on environmental concerns and the need for designing for a purpose.

In Food Technology, pupils focus on developing knowledge and understanding of nutrition and
food hygiene. In Years 7 and 8 pupils follow the Licence to Cook programme and develop practical
skills producing a range of delicious products. In Year 9, pupils have the opportunity to really
demonstrate their imagination and skills through the major project of the year, "Design and make a
three course meal suitable for an airline". This project culminates in a full day in the department
producing and presenting their meals.

In Textile Technology, pupils develop an understanding of different textile materials and are
encouraged to use their imagination to design items with the theatre in mind. Our local environment
is also used to assist pupils in generating ideas for group projects.
